This tall one-of-a-kind vase is carefully carved and opened as the clay is hardening, so the inside wall of the vase is revealed. Once painted with a pigmented liquid clay, the vase appears to be opening its arms to a flurry of hummingbirds feasting on pink and blue flowers within. It is a centerpiece sculpture that can be viewed from any angle. It is about 15 inches tall and is covered with a water-tight glaze, so it can hold living flowers. However, it is most appreciated empty.
This vase is part of a private collection in Oxford, Connecticut. A selection of similar recreations of this vase is available in different colors and sizes at my online shop.
