This tall vase covered with hummingbirds is part of my "Rainbow Vase" collection because of the background colors on which the painting appears. As with an actual rainbow, the colors blend into one another so subtly it is hard to define where one color ends and a new color begins.
On this vase, the background colors gently shift from a shadowy green near the base into a cool yellow at the top -- suggestive of dusk. Even the hummingbirds are blue instead of the usual, warmer green glaze, with which I usually paint them. The only warmth of sunlight is reflected in the orange flowers from which the birds feed, before they disappear into the night. Like most of the vases in this collection, I left the outside surface without a transparent coating, which gives a soft, velvety finish.
Similar recreations of this vase can be custom ordered at my online shop.
